Building on linguistic theories (e.g., linguistic determinism, emergent-identity, sociopragmatic transfer) and a short queer-history overview, the article argues that speaking multiple languages gives queer people extra expressive “tools” that let them coin or borrow terminology when one language lacks it, navigate cultures that differ in acceptance levels, and forge deeper emotional bonds. Three interviews with multilingual Stanford students illustrate these themes of linguistic adaptation, cultural navigation and socio-emotional connection, suggesting multilingualism can strengthen resilience and community among LGBTQ individuals. • Robert McRuer on Crip Theory

🎥 Video | 📅 Last Accessed on: 11/07/2025

Crip Theory, developed by Robert McRuer, is an interdisciplinary framework that merges queer theory and disability studies to challenge normative ideas of ability, sexuality, and embodiment. In his seminal book Crip Theory: Cultural Signs of Queerness and Disability (2006), McRuer argues that dominant cultural ideals promote what he terms “compulsory able-bodiedness,” a counterpart to “compulsory heterosexuality.” He suggests that both queerness and disability disrupt normative social expectations, and thus share a radical potential to critique and resist systems of oppression. Crip Theory invites us to rethink the value of bodies and identities that are often marginalized, positioning them not as deficits, but as sources of resistance, creativity, and political possibility.

Based on semi-structured interviews with 30 participants from Central and South America, the research documents severe abuse—including torture in freezing cells (“La Hielera”), denial of basic needs and medical care, punitive solitary confinement, and transphobic violence . These dehumanizing conditions led to significant psychological effects such as trauma, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and a preference among some to self-deport . The authors argue for the abolition of immigration detention, improved mental healthcare, and systemic policy reforms to create humane, affirming conditions for asylum-seeking trans Latinx individuals .

In the PBS interview, Angela Davis reflects on her involvement in the Black Panther Party (BPP) during the Civil Rights Movement, emphasizing her role as a rank-and-file member rather than a leader. She highlights the significant contributions of women within the BPP, noting that many were responsible for organizing community programs and political education. Davis also addresses the challenges of sexism within revolutionary movements, pointing out that women often had to outperform men to gain recognition and leadership roles. Her experience with the BPP led her to join the Communist Party, seeking a more comprehensive framework for understanding and addressing systemic oppression. Davis advocates for a feminism that is intersectional, recognizing the interconnectedness of race, class, and gender in struggles for justice. She underscores the importance of solidarity and collective action in achieving social change, urging continued resistance against institutionalized racism and sexism.
